Why Read (850 words)

I am sure that, like me, you all have dreams, plans and ideals of how you want to look, live and present yourself in this life. For some it might be the bad ass gangsters from the movies, or a swarve smooth talking business man who plays golf on weekends, or a socialist elite, or a fire starter, or Batman, some might even aspire to become more like Harry Potter…but I doubt it. I am also pretty confident that, like me, many of your aspirations for yourself seem to be an unclimbable mountain some way off in the distance in which day after day, month after month and year after year you still don’t seem to be getting any nearer to. Time to change that, no?. Here’s how.

I am also pretty confident that, like me, many  of your aspirations for yourself seem to be an unclimbable mountain some way off in the distance in which day after day, month after month and year after year you still don’t seem to be getting any nearer to. Time to change that, no?. Here’s how.

.

Why The Mountain Is Running Away From You

Your mountain is on the run so you need to chase the little blighter down and forcefully route it firmly in the ground.

Where and what you are now is simply the collaboration of all your previous and current habits. You are simply a collection of habits. All your choices in the past have lead to who you are right now. Life is just a series of individual decisions and every decision you have ever made is a small step that makes up the path that extends behind you.

Habits themselves are like rope, weaved overtime, they become stronger. You life starts to look like the rope chain below, a weaving of all your habits.

No doubt your aspirations for yourself are going to be at least a little different from where you are now and in most cases a lot different. If not, then perhaps you should rethink you aspirations.

.

Batman Is A Long Way From Skinny White Kid.

Having big plans for your life is the very point of personal aspirations, however too many people seem to forget that to become that person you are aspiring to, your current habits need to change. Your current habits have created you and if you simply mix the same habits together in a test tube, you are simple going to end up with you again, nothing magical will change this.

Every individual is simply a Frankenstein of their thoughts and habits.

If you want something different then you cannot expect to achieve the change by following the same habits and thinking the same thoughts. It is not rocket science, it stands to reason.

You need to change the ingredients and this means changing your habits to align with the person you want to become. This is a long term process but the battle is won on a day to day and decision to decision basis. You cannot win the war if you don’t first win the battles.

.

Win The Daily Battles To Win The War

Every single decision you make from now on is going to have an impact on wether you meet the aspirations you have set for yourself. Beneficial decisions are going to get you there faster, detrimental decisions are going to slow you down. Simply put, every decision you make is always going to be either a good one or a bad one with regards to your goals.

Make more good decisions then bad ones and you will eventual reach your goals.

Make substantially more good decisions then bad ones and you will get there quicker. Make more bad decisions then good ones and the aspirational goal will fade into the distance like a barge ship drifting into the fog.

It is therefore essential that you remember that every decision you make, no matter how big or small IS GOING TO HAVE AN EFFECT.

If you are trying to lose weight, for example, and have an ideal weight in mind then every meal decision, every food decision and every exercise decision is going to effect that goal. If you make poor decisions daily and eat pizza instead of a salad or watch TV instead of go for a run then your goals are going to drift off. If however you start to win your individual battles and make good decisions on a daily basis then you will win the war and get the body that your are aspiring to. The same principle applies to any other aspiration or goals.

.

To Sum Up

Goals and Aspirations are achieved on a day to day, hour by hour and decision by decision basis. A few bad ones is not the end of the world, just as a few good ones will not see success. One must focus on every decision they make and know that the outcome of this battle is going to determine the outcome of the war. Happy battles.

Weave a strong cable of good habits.

Peace.

Good post! I think another thing to add about decision making is to actually MAKE them. This seems to be something that also keeps people stagnant in their lives. Good or bad, if you suffer from indecision, you will not get to where you want to be.

    • Jonny says:

      Thanks Neil,

I agree, the key to success is to be decisive, one will never have all the facts to hand so we have to make the best decision we can given the information to hand. The rich know this, great leaders know this and the successful know this.

      Thanks for you comment.

  2. Ruke says:

I like that quote “Every individual is simply a Frankenstein of their thoughts and habits.” I think the best way to change your habits is through the subconscious. To do that you have to speak your subconscious’ language: imagination. I make blueprints for my subconscious to carry out. Its really easy, all I do is visualize myself already having the habit and doing whatever the habit is. Thanks for the post on this :)

    • Jonny says:

      Hi Ruke,

I would say it is not only one way, but the very best and really ONLY effective way. Expanding ones reality through visualisation of the future and giving your subconscious an image of the life you want to lead is the most powerful way of achieving your goals, dreams and aspirations.

Though I wouldn’t go around calling everyone a Frankenstein, some might take it the wrong way.

      Thanks for your comment.

  3. NP says:

Agree with you on that one Nell. Great post Jonny!

  4. Ben Weston says:

    Hey Jonny,

I like how you point out that it’s a daily decision. Unlike the movies, there won’t be some big climatic moment in which one decision makes everything suck or amazingly epic. It’s the everyday decisions that make up the end result.

And now that you mentioned it, ever since sharing your post, my girlfriend has been kinda aroused. Now that’s the kinda science I like.

    • Jonny says:

      HI Ben,

Sometime I think there will be a few epic moments throughout your life but there are the climax of every small decision, hour of work and sacrifice you have made up to that point. For example in the pursuit of wealth often it takes years of seeing no returns on your learning and effort and then suddenly, almost overnight, things can start paying off and the money starts flooding in. I reckon a similar things happens with blogs, businesses and anything else one can think of.

Lol, glad to hear my words are arousing your girlfriend mate.

      Thanks for the comment.

  5. I certainly agree with the sentiment of this message, but I’m not convinced it has to be quite so systematic. Sure there are people who have elaborate plans and they layout out these intricate plans to accomplish said plans by typically doing “what’s right” and developing sound habits. There’s no denying this..

But I also think there’s often some serendipity involved. There are countless people who don’t have any inclination as to what they want to do. My Dad is 57 and he likes to say he still doesn’t know what he wants to be when he grows up.

I agree with Nell – I think you need to take action and learn from your experiences, and sometimes those dreams will find you. Good food for thought Jonny.

    • Jonny says:

      Hi Ryan,

Thanks for visiting and raising an interesting point. For me, systems and habits for the road map for life but there is an element of serendipity in the original destination and the views that come along on the journey.

I smiled when I read about your Dad, that is a great outlook to have on life and I commend him for it.

Good luck with your marketing blog, I would have liked to watch some of the videos but the internet in India is too slow.

      Thanks for commenting.

  6. Kaye Porter says:

    Too true!

One of the thing I tell my clients is that people won’t go anywhere they can’t see.. Also, you can’t just stop a behavior, you have to replace it with a new one.

For example, telling someone who sits on the couch instead of going jogging 1) has to come to the point where they VALUE what jogging will provide them, over what they currently have.. and 2) break the actions down into small enough pieces so that they can make consistent, ongoing change.

If you find yourself keeping sabotaging your goals, check in with your unconscious to see if there is some need being met by the unwanted behavior, and come up with news was of meeting it!

    • Jonny says:

      Hi Kaye,

I like it, great advice. Breaking habits are difficult due to the fact they are indeed woven over time and can become very strong. Perhaps replacing the cord with another is better than trying to break it. I like the thinking.

      Thanks for the comment.
